EMS, WHS & CMG Systems
Included in your NSWGCSA superintendent’s membership for the first time are our newly developed Environmental Management System, Work Health Safety System and Chemical Management Guide templates.
Our EMS and WHS systems were developed in line with the Golf Course Environmental and Safety Management Code – 2015. Both systems include templates of policies and procedures which will assist our members to implement a basic level of compliance to Australian and International standards, namely ISO 14001 and AS4801. By simply printing and filing the templates supplied will not meet compliance to standards nor to the code, the templates are there for a superintendent or manager to tailor to their organisation and implement within their department, only after the relevant templates are fully developed and implemented will your department meet a basic level of compliance.
What is an environmental management system (EMS)
An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a set of processes and practices that enable an organisation to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. An EMS provides a framework that helps a company achieve its environmental goals through consistent control of its operations. The EMS itself does not dictate a level of environmental performance that must be achieved; each company’s EMS must be tailored to the company’s business and goals. An EMS is a continuous improvement process with the following basic elements: • Reviewing the company’s environmental goals • Analysing its environmental impacts and legal requirements • Setting environmental objectives and targets to reduce legal requirements • Establishing programs to meet these objectives and targets • Monitoring and measuring progress in achieving the objectives • Ensuring employees’ environmental awareness and competence • Reviewing the progress of the EMS and making improvements

What is a work health and safety system (WHS)
A Work Health and Safety Management System is a coordinated and systematic approach to managing health and safety risks. WHSs help organisations to continually improve their safety performance and compliance to health and safety legislation and standards. In doing so, they establish safer working environments that protect people at work by eliminating, or better managing, health and safety hazards.

The importance of implementation
The following EMS, WHS and CMG documentation provided by the NSWGCSA must be managed appropriately in order to meet minimum compliance. These documents are templates only. It is the responsibility of the user to tailor these documents to their organisation and implement the policies and procedures in their workplace, failure to do so will result in non-compliance issues.
EMS & WHS certification
Gaining external certification of your EMS can give your business credibility with customers and stakeholders. Many customers and suppliers require external certification before they will recognise it. External certification also offers your stakeholders reassurance as they can be sure that the information you provide has been independently checked and verified. The NSWGCSA recommends that superintendents seriously consider having their systems certified and audited using external resources.
